Dead time and pileup in pulsed parametric X-ray spectroscopy
نویسندگان
چکیده
Spectroscopy of parametric X-rays (PXR) from pulsed electron sources is usually done with very low electron beam currents in order to avoid dead time losses and pileup problems. This paper presents a method that allows correction of dead time losses and pileup in pulsed X-ray spectroscopy. Such correction is required in order to study the variation of PXR production and linewidth with increased electron beam currents. The method presented here uses the observed integrated count rate in a PXR peak and the total count rate to obtain the dead time and pileup corrected rates. The method also allows treatment of pulse pileup from a first-order reflection to a second-order reflection and can be extended to higher order reflections. Application of the theory to measured data is demonstrated and corrections of up to a factor of four are demonstrated. The method described in this paper can be applied to any pulsed spectrum measurement and is not specific to PXR, which was used here for comparison of the theory to experiments. r 2004 Elsevier B.V. The sources of errors associated with the measurement of nuclear radiations includethe noise associated with the radiation pulse, the dead time required for the processing of the incident radiation pulse and the pileup of pulses. In analogue processing, these errors are often downplayed leading to appreciable errors in the observed results. Some digital processors have been designed and built a...

متن کاملSYNTHESIS OF HIGH ASPECT RATIO SILVER NANOWIRES: PARAMETRIC STUDY OF THE POLYOL PROCESS
Silver nanowires (AgNWs) are considered as one-dimensional nanostructures, which have received much attention due to their nanoscale size, high aspect ratio, high electrical and thermal conductivity, optical transparency and high mechanical stability. Preparation of AgNWs by polyol process is remarkably sensitive to the interactions between synthesis parameters. In this study, the effect of the...

A semi-analytical model describing spectral distortions in photon-counting detectors (PCDs) for clinical computed tomography was evaluated using simulated data. The distortions were due to count rate-independent spectral response effects and count rate-dependent pulse-pileup effects and the model predicted both the mean count rates and the spectral shape. The model parameters were calculated us...
